"The chicken is involved but the hog is committed"! Ever heard that quote before?? 'What does it mean?' you say...Well, the chicken doesn't give her life for the morning meal...she is involved in the process of producing the egg for that wonderful scrambled egg that you eat. But the hog on the other hand...now he gives his all--even his life....for that grilled livermush or country ham that you and I enjoy so much!
People are the same way. Many will become 'involved' as far as being a part of the audience...sometimes even going a step further and taking a small step toward becoming more involved. Participating in the things that doesn't include asking anything that would inconvenience their time...or comfort level.
But the one committed. That is a different story. They give their time, their talent, and oftentimes even their very lives to the cause. Get their hands dirty....go when they have 'other things' to do...do when they feel they can't go any more....Some make a managerie of excuses to not get involved....bottom line just not enough time in the day...but those who are committed...they press toward the mark. Thinking upward, moving forward!
Take a marriage, for example. On their Wedding Day they commit to each other for life. The good, the bad and the ugly are all melted into one promise to remain faithful and bound to the other as long as life on earth is given to each of them. How often does this promise or committment become too heavy of a burden to bear and the committment is broken. They were both involved...but the committment level broke down for whatever reason and their desire and involvment changed and their committment became separation and disenvolvement. Broken.
Now we look at Jesus. Was he involved or committed?? He stepped out of His 'comfort zone' so to speak of Heaven...came to earth as an innocent baby, fully relying on His Mother to care for and nurture Him. All along His journey, He was different. The same, but different!
He was involved in His earthly Father's business and I'm sure He was involved in His community as far as the religious and social activities of His day. But He became committed when He stepped up at the Wedding Supper and took on His Mantle as as the long-looked-for Promised One of Israel! Lord of Lords and King of Kings. Messiah. Prince of Peace. Holy One of Israel. Wonderful Councilor. Mighty God.
Whatever title you wish to give to Him, He began His public ministry and journey to the Cross when He turned the water into wine at the Wedding Feast. (Read about it in John Chapter 2. )
Are we the chicken or the hog in our walk of life? Do we know Jesus??? Are we involved with Jesus...or are we committed to Him??
